FAQ

Here you will find a collection of customer questions, which we are constantly expanding.

We look forward to receiving your suggestions, you are welcome to contact our nutrition and product consulting team at beratung@herrmanns-manufaktur.com.

Questions on the composition of the fodder

Are artificial vitamins or additives added?

Not only have we had ourselves certified as organic, we have also joined the Biokreis producers’ association, which sets even stricter guidelines and bans synthetic additives. You can therefore be sure that all products in the Classic, Selection and Creative Mix lines do not contain any synthetic or nature-identical vitamins.

We recommend a varied diet for your quadruped. For this purpose we offer you the possibility with more than 25 menu types, different recipes and the Creative Mix for individual feeding.

You can read more about the natural nutrients in our menus in our blog:

Wie kommen Nährstoffe ins Futter? Bei uns sind sie natürlich schon drin.

Are preservatives or binding agents added?

No, we do NOT use any preservatives. Our feed is prepared in cold filling, then sealed and gently heated. In this way we can naturally guarantee a shelf life of several years.

You can read more about the production process in our blog: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-frisch-gekocht-so-erklaeren-sich-unterschiede-bei-farbe-und-konsistenz

Is taurine added to the feed?

Yes, but only for the menus in the Selection line. In our feed, taurine comes primarily from the heart muscle, meat, green-lipped mussel powder and shrimp. However, taurine may be lost when the feed is heated. We have had the taurine values for our pure meat varieties determined by a laboratory. The laboratory results show that these are animals or natural products, which are naturally subject to fluctuations. The results are accordingly different.

Taurine is essential for cats and a deficiency can therefore have major health consequences. Therefore, we supplement our cat food with 0.1% taurine, as approved by the Biokreis e. V. producer association. The pure meat varieties from the creative mix remain unaffected by this. The exact values per variety can be found in the online shop under “ingredients”.

Is thyroid gland used?

Thyroid gland is not an ingredient in our feed. However, in our poultry varieties we use necks as a source of calcium and here residual thyroid gland components cannot be completely excluded by the slaughtering process. These do not pose a risk in healthy animals.

Is vitamin K3 used?

No. Menadione, also known as vitamin K3, is produced synthetically and is also very controversial. Organic products are characterised in particular by the fact that they contain no undesirable additives such as pesticides, antibiotics, colourings or flavour enhancers and, above all, no synthetic substances. Our feed menus only contain the natural nutrients that the ingredients provide.

You can read more about the nutrients in the feed in our blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-kommen-naehrstoffe-ins-futter-bei-uns-sind-sie-natuerlich-schon-drin

What is the composition of the meat content of the feed?

Our food is to be considered as if it was home-cooked. With meat, we only use one type of protein source at a time.

The pure meat varieties are made up as follows:

Meat types: approx. 65 % muscle meat, 25 % heart, 10 % lungs
Poultry varieties: about 90 % breast meat and about 5 % necks, 5 % carcass

The menus for dogs:

Meat types: approx. 60 % muscle meat, 25 % heart, 10 % lung and 5 % liver
Poultry varieties: approx. 80 % breast meat and approx. 5 % hearts, 5 % necks, 5 % carcass, 5 % liver

Die Menüs für Katzen:

Meat types: approx. 60 % muscle meat, 20 % heart, 10 % lung and 10 % liver
Poultry varieties: approx. 75 % breast meat, 10 % liver, 5 % necks, 5 % hearts, 5 % carcass

Which calcium source is used?

Minerals in feed are very important nutrients, especially calcium and phosphorus. As bones contain a lot of calcium, the necks and carcass or bones of poultry are also utilised and finely minced within the framework of current feeding recommendations (approx. 10 %).
In menus with meat types from the Selection line, where the mincing of bones is not possible, the calcium-phosphorus ratio is balanced by adding organic eggshell powder or algae lime and is indicated as an ingredient.

We have compiled more information on the important subject of calcium and phosphorus in our blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/calcium-phosphor-warum-ist-dieses-paerchen-so-wichtig-worauf-kommt-es-an-richtwerte

Why are no offal such as spleen and kidneys used?

Spleen and kidneys are also recommended for feeding from time to time, especially for raw meat feeding / BARF. From our point of view, the spleen provides a lot of iron, but has a rather poor protein quality due to a high connective tissue content and is more difficult to digest. The kidneys are regarded as a detoxification organ and should only be fed occasionally. They also often do not like to be eaten.

Since our pure meat varieties or menus should be fed daily, we do not want to use spleen and kidneys.

Questions about production and the raw materials used

Are extra animals slaughtered for feed?

No. Muscle meat is used, which is spurned by humans and loved by our four-legged friends. These are muscle meat parts such as heart, lungs, and seam meat (diaphragm). These are well suited for our pets. So no animal has died in vain.

Are the cans BPA-free?

The tins or pouches are coated with BPA-NI. lacquers. “NI” stands for “non-intent”, so they are BPA-free. It is an alternative coating without BPA as a starting substance. This is, as far as known, a new can coating and according to legislation and the current state of science, it is harmless to health.

How is the lining produced at Herrmann’s Manufaktur? What is cold filling?

We produce our wet food in the so-called “cold filling” process, i.e. the bags or cans are filled at approx. 4 °C to prevent bacterial growth during the filling process. A closed process is used, i.e. all ingredients are ground and filled raw or as raw sausage meat cold. This is all done without the use of additives, fillers and preservatives of any kind.

Then the can and each bag is immediately sealed and rinsed with hot water in an autoclave. In this way, all products are gently heated to a temperature of up to 120 degrees and are made durable for several years by this type of production process alone. Contact with the cooking water is completely excluded.

During the cooking process, natural meat juices can escape from the meat sausage, similar to how they would do at home when roasting in a pan. This can be recognised as a free liquid or broth when the tin is opened. Depending on the ingredients and fluctuations in the raw materials, the quantity may vary. At cold ambient temperatures, the liquid gels. This liquid is not water, but valuable, natural meat broth, which should be fed with.

You can also find out more about the production in our blog: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-frisch-gekocht-so-erklaeren-sich-unterschiede-bei-farbe-und-konsistenz

What is the consistency of the feed?

Herrmann’s Manufaktur offers finely minced real meat. This results in a paté-like consistency.

The pieces in sauce of the big industry, which at first glance appear so delicious, are not available from us, as this is usually foam made of animal meal, which is cut into cubes and infused with sauce.

What type of fish is used?

Wild caught salmon is used.

Where do the ingredients come from?

Our meat comes mainly from regional, certified organic farms or from species-appropriate husbandry where this seems sensible. For our poultry we also support the Bruderhahn initiative and use poultry from farms that consciously raise brother cocks instead of killing them.

You can find more details on this in our blog article on our supplier: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/unser-lieferant-mit-herz-fuers-huhn-die-eiermacher-gmbh-aus-oesterreich

Fish comes from sustainable fishing, game and horses from their natural environment. All other ingredients (vegetables, fruit, millet, amaranth etc.) are also sourced from controlled organic, regional cultivation.

You can read more about the question “organic or species-appropriate husbandry” in our blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/ist-bio-immer-besser-was-sagt-die-ethik

Where does the meat for the “horse” varieties come from?

We also obtain the horse meat from regional sources and partly from Baden-Württemberg. This avoids live transports. Foals are not used. The horses come either from organic farms where riding schools are also operated and farms where not all of the school horses can be kept, or from other herds which exclude the possibility of keeping them as “pets”.

We do not buy stocks from farms where the foals of the mare are taken away for milk production.

Which game meat is used?

The game is deer and roe deer from the wild. No wild boar is used.

Questions about nutrition and feeding

Are the menus a complete food?

The food is to be considered as if it was home-cooked. The menus each contain only one source of protein and healthy vegetables and/or fruit, fats and sometimes carbohydrates in the form of cereals or potatoes. The assortment includes a large selection of menus, so that there is a possibility of variety and therefore balance. Each menu offers different nutrients, depending on the different and carefully selected ingredients. Therefore, we recommend varied feeding.

You can read more about the natural nutrients in our menus in our blog: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-kommen-naehrstoffe-ins-futter-bei-uns-sind-sie-natuerlich-schon-drin

The important role of fats and oils is explained here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/feine-oele-wichtige-bausteine-einer-guten-ernaehrung

We explain the possibilities for the very individual way of feeding with the creative mix here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/unser-kreativ-mix-so-gehts

Are the pure meat tins of the creative mix also suitable for cats?

Yes, you can use the tins of pure meat and supplement them with small amounts of fibre, fruit & vegetables and fats (such as coconut fat) yourself. Coconut flakes are especially popular with cats. It is important that the requirements are covered.

You can find an article on feeding recommendations for cats here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/gute-ernaehrung-fuer-katzen-5-haeufige-fragen-wir-antworten

An article on feeding cats and dogs can be found here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-viel-futter-braucht-mein-tier

Are the pure meat varieties of the creative mix fully mineralised?

The pure meat varieties are natural. In order to create a balance of calcium and phosphorus in our feed, necks and carcasses are usually used as a calcium source in the production of poultry, while necks with cartilage are used for meat (according to the current recommendations for feed rations, approx. 10%).

The meat is finely minced and nothing artificial is added. With these types of meat this is possible because small parts can be finely minced without leaving any bone parts in the feed. With meat types such as beef, game, horse or sheep, bone mincing is not possible. We deliberately avoid the addition of bone meal. Therefore, the calcium and phosphorus content may vary within the limits.

More about the creative mix can be found in the blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/unser-kreativ-mix-so-gehts

You can find the values of the respective varieties in the online shop.

At what age can the lining from Herrmann’s Manufaktur be used?

The feed can be used from the second month onwards. It should be borne in mind that puppies are still developing and therefore have an increased need for high-quality protein.

However, it is also very suitable for senior citizens who need to gain weight to prevent muscle loss.

Do I have to add oils or herbs to my food?

Not with our species-appropriate menus of the Classic and Selection lines. These recipes have been developed in a balanced way by our nutritionist. In special situations or when the choice of varieties is limited, you can add oils or herbs.

The creative mix is to be understood as an individual ingredient shelf, here you should add a few percent oils. You can find out how you can easily become a creative mixer here in the blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/unser-kreativ-mix-so-gehts

How long can the food be kept open?

The food can be kept in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days after opening the can. The food should be fed at room temperature. It is also possible to freeze the food in portions.

How often should you feed per day?

We recommend, especially for large dogs, to divide the food ration twice a day. This also differs for cats, many eat more than once a day. Puppies and kittens also need several small meals a day in the first few months. Fresh water should always be available.

What does a species-appropriate diet for dogs and cats look like?

The aim should be to provide a natural and species-appropriate diet that meets the requirements of nutrients for a well-functioning metabolism as well as energy in sufficient quantities.

We have written a blog article about feeding recommendations for dogs and cats: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/wie-viel-futter-braucht-mein-tier

You can find your own blog article about feeding cats here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/gute-ernaehrung-fuer-katzen-5-haeufige-fragen-wir-antworten

What is different about the puppy menus?

Puppies need a higher percentage of meat, as they are in the “build-up” phase. It should be a highly digestible or highly usable meat, mainly muscle meat. In addition, there should be healthy vegetables and fruit, oils and some carbohydrates. For this reason, our puppy menus contain a higher proportion of meat than the other menus. But it is also very suitable for senior citizens who need to gain weight to prevent muscle loss.

You can find an article on the puppy ABC here: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/herrmanns-kleines-welpen-abc

What is the creative mix?

The creative mix offers the possibility to put together a feed according to your own ideas and to adjust it to the situation of the animal. Here you will find all ingredients necessary for a healthy feed ration, such as meat, vegetables & fruit, cereal or potato flakes as well as organic herbs, organic eggshell powder and green-lipped mussel powder.

How easy it is to become a creative mixer is explained in our blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/unser-kreativ-mix-so-gehts

What is the difference between the Classic and Selection lines?

It all started with the Classic line for dogs, according to the motto: The good is always the simple. So here we focus on natural recipes with few and high-quality ingredients from organic farming. The recipes with few ingredients are also suitable for dogs with allergies.

In the Selection line for dogs and cats, we have given free rein to our ideas for balanced and varied menus and created many individual meals, tailored to special needs and phases of life.

You can read more about the assortment and the orientation of the lines in our blog:

General questions about feed

Can I order a test package?

Yes with pleasure! The Herrmanns Manufaktur webshop offers the possibility to order a test package free of charge. Only the postage fee will be charged.

Click here to go to the test packages: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/angebote/testpakete/

Can you give exact values for nutrients in feed?

Only the legal values are determined according to the so-called Weender analysis, nutrients are not usually included. As no artificial food supplements are specifically added to the feed, but only organic food and the best meat in organic quality or from species-appropriate husbandry (with the exception of game, rabbit, horse and fish) are used, the values can of course also fluctuate. It is therefore difficult to state such values. Manufacturers who work with additives find it easier to do so, as they then have constant values due to a constant mixture (usually of synthetic origin).

We try to ensure that the composition is always the same. Due to seasonal fluctuations and varying demand, however, the proportion of offal or muscle meat may vary. However, this is done within the legal tolerances and analytical information on the label.
The tins of pure meat have been tested with regard to the nutrients most in demand. The results of the analysis can be obtained on request from the Herrmann’s-Manufaktur advisory team.

Do dented cans damage the food?

Dents on cans should not occur, but it can easily happen during transport. The food will not be damaged by the dents as long as the cans do not leak.

How do deviations in colour and consistency of the feed occur?

Our raw materials are subject to raw material fluctuations, not every animal is the same. The consistency of the feed can therefore also vary depending on the meat and menu produced. Since no binding agents or fillers are used, different liquids can be produced during heating. The water content of the vegetables used also plays a major role here.
In our blog article we have dealt with this topic in more detail:

Wie frisch gekocht. So erklären sich Unterschiede bei Farbe und Konsistenz

Questions about the company

Can the Herrmann company be visited?

Of course you have the opportunity to visit us and get to know our company. This should be arranged in advance.

Does Herrmann’s Manufaktur perform animal experiments?

No. For us it is a matter of course that no animal experiments are carried out; after all, the welfare of farm animals and pets is close to our heart.

The recipes are all developed in-house by one of our nutritionists. In the case of new varieties, we test the acceptance, digestion etc. in the dogs and cats of employees, friends and acquaintances.

What does food quality mean? What is a K3 operation?

In the production of animal feed, mostly muscle meat is used, which, although spurned by humans, is good for our pets (the so-called stab meat, heart, poultry necks, etc.). This situation is regulated by law: In a pet food business, all food automatically becomes so-called K3 goods as soon as it reaches the premises, this also applies to potatoes or fruit. It is important for us to point out that Herrmann’s Manufaktur does NOT use waste such as hooves, feathers, horns, pig bristles from animals or other parts that have no place in a high-quality animal feed. We also refrain from using what we consider to be inferior offal such as kidney or spleen.

If you advertise with “food quality”, this means that only those (few) parts of the animal that are suitable for human consumption will die. However, this is not in line with our views on animal welfare and not with our views on treating farm animals with respect. Only by using as many parts of the farm animal as possible that are good for pets will no animal die in vain.

What principles are important to Herrmann’s Manufaktur?

Herrmann’s Manufaktur is a certified organic company that specialises in producing high-quality dog and cat food.

Founded in 2006 out of inner conviction, the manufactory is now managed by Mr. Erich Herrmann at its third, expanded location in the Bavarian Oberland.

We produce high quality organic pet food with great love every day, as our love of animals includes both pets and farm animals. Herrmann’s Manufaktur is certified organic and has joined the strictly controlled producer association Biokreis e.V.

You can learn more about our company in the blog article: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/bio-pionier-seit-2006-groesser-und-weiter-der-3-standort-ruft

Which guiding principles define the company?

Species-appropriate and natural: Each recipe is composed in a species-appropriate way and is made purely from natural ingredients.

Transparency: We declare “semi-open” according to feed law. This means that for most, but not all ingredients the exact percentage is declared: We do this to protect our recipes. However, all ingredients are listed on the label, which is especially important for allergic animals.

Monoprotein: We use only 1 protein source at a time (except Selection Cat “Salmon&Chicken”), including high-quality muscle, heart and lung meat, making the food suitable for allergy sufferers. For poultry we use breast meat, necks and carcass. Offal such as kidney or spleen are inferior in our opinion and are not processed.

Special questions about our dry food / fitness muesli

How does Herrmann’s Manufaktur Trockennahrung / Fitness-Müslis differ from other manufacturers?

Our dried fitness mueslis are characterised by the fact that only dried meat and the best organic ingredients are used. The meat specification refers to the fresh meat content.

Additives such as dyes, flavour enhancers etc., which can trigger allergic reactions, are not included here either. All components are gently dried separately using warm air. Then the dried meat cubes are formed into crumbs so that they attach to the vegetable and cereal flakes.

Depending on the recipe, vegetables, cereals or fruit are added to the meat.

With liquid, as with muesli: In contrast to dry food from other manufacturers, this food is soaked in warm water before feeding and is given quasi as moist food.

You can read more about our muesli and how to prepare it in our blog post: https://herrmanns-manufaktur.com/wir/blog/urlaubszeit-ist-mueslizeit-auf-reisen-vollwertig-versorgt-mit-unserem-trockenfutter

What does the meat indication in dry food refer to?

Herrmann’s dried fodder is characterised by the fact that only dried meat and the best organic ingredients are used. The meat specification refers to the fresh meat content. Due to the swelling, the feed rises by 2 /3. The feeding recommendation refers to the dried meat as delivered, NOT to the final condition.

After soaking our fitness mueslis in warm water and thus feeding them wet, it is in our opinion no problem to mix the mueslis with canned food or to change them during the day.

Why is there no dry food for cats?

You will not find dry food for cats in Herrmann’s Manufaktur’s range of products, as we do not believe that it corresponds to the appropriate diet for a cat. Since cats are descended from desert animals, they get their fluids from their food. This is only possible with wet food. Dry food can promote health problems, especially if the animals do not drink enough.
